How to Prioritize Your Sleep if You are an Entrepreneur

It isn’t easy being an entrepreneur. People admire the amount of money that entrepreneurs have earned for themselves (in case of successful ones only). However, they do not pay attention to the comforts that an individual had to forego to achieve it all.

Starting my mini business, I remember paying for my Spectrum TV Choice channels every month while I hardly got time to watch TV. But I did not compromise on my sleep. Here is how I managed to get a good night’s sleep.

Schedule Sleep

You will have to prioritize and schedule your sleep. The best way to go about it is to think of your sleep like a client call or a meeting that you need to fit in your schedule. Make sure to allow a good 5-6 hours from your life to sleep. If you can afford more, that would be even better. The suggested time is eight hours though. But we all know that it is not always possible to have a sound sleep for eight hours.

Therefore, even if you can allow yourself six hours, that would be great. You can always cover up for the lost hours over the weekend.

Monitor Caffeine Intake

Having coffee in the morning is a great idea to put the cranky in you to sleep. But I would not recommend consuming drinks rich in caffeine a good 3-4 hours before your planned (or unplanned) bedtime. You should avoid consuming coffee late in the day because it will keep you up all night. And by the time sleep will come your way, it will already be morning. The cycle will continue and you will end up being frustrated and cranky.

Move Your Body

Many people believe that working out can lead to fatigue that will keep you down for the rest of the day. But guess what? This fatigue is necessary for you so that you can go to sleep as soon as you hit the bed. Not that exercising is bad for your health anyway. If you decide to go to the gym after work every day, you do yourself a favor in the following two ways:

  • Keeping your body healthy
  • Managing your sleep well

So, please get a gym membership if you do not have one already. Working out will not only release your day’s stress but will also prepare you for a productive day ahead.

Stay Away from Blue Screens

Blue screens are the biggest culprits if you are not able to get good sleep. Make it a habit to not check your smartphone, tablet or laptop when in bed. Stay away from the blue screens as much as you can before you go to sleep. Because they deprive you of the sleep that you were to enjoy otherwise. Researches suggest that the blue light suppresses the production of melatonin. This same hormone is responsible for putting you to sleep. Hence, maintain your distance.

Meditation

Meditation puts you in a state of relaxation. Not only do you relax physically but your mind gets the much-needed rest as well. As they say, when you enter the state of meditation, it’s like you are in a deep sleep. However, the key here is to do it the right way. Many people claim that meditation does not work for them. Well, they are not doing it right and that is the only issue.

This does not imply that you have to visit a spa or a special place to meditate. You can do it in the comfort of your room. Just make sure that it’s all quiet and calm in the room. Play some soothing music, close your eyes and make the best out of those 10-15 minutes.

To-Do List

Make a list of all the chores you need to do so that everything gets done well within time. And you do not end up surprising yourself. The challenge over here would be to have a look at the to-do list as well. Because many people make a list but hardly look at it. You will have to develop this habit. It will help you throughout your career. As you will be able to manage things well.

Remember, good management comes with time management.

Emails can Wait

You can always reply to your emails the next morning (in case you receive any late at night). Do not put yourself through the torture of replying to each after office hours. You will only invite trouble and nothing else. It is good to be a workaholic but you have to make your health and wellness a priority.

These are all the hacks I learned during the course of my time as an entrepreneur. Yes, I now enjoy my Spectrum TV Select package as much as others do. I give myself the much needed ‘me time’ and I have succeeded in keeping a healthy balance between my work and personal life too.
